SCHOLARSHIPS – 2022-2023 - In Order by Deadline

 

WESTMORELAND COLUMBUS 500 MERIT SCHOLARSHIP -the purpose of the Westmoreland Columbus 500 Merit Scholarship is to encourage and assist youth of Italian descent to pursue higher education.  The scholarship will provide financial assistance to Italo-American student who a high promise of success.  Criteria:  students in Westmoreland County, senior year in high school, at least one parent of Italian descent, completed application.  Application must be postmarked by February 3, 2023.  Additional information and application available in the Guidance Office or Class of 2023 Teams. 

 

LUCY A. VALERO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Administered by the PSEA Scholarship Trust - this scholarship is awarded to one or more outstanding students each year who plan to enroll in an accredited teacher preparation program in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was established by the many friends of Lucy A. Valero in recognition of her dedicated service to education through her teaching and her years of service to the Pennsylvania State Education Association. DANTE ALEIGHIERI LODGE #244-Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America-57th Anniversary Heritage Scholarship Dinner, $2,000 Scholarship is to encourage and assist the youths of Italian descent and others to pursue higher education.  The scholarship will provide financial assistance to those who show a high promise of success.  Qualifications:  must be in senior year of high school; must be accepted for admission to a 2- or 4-year degree-granting institution or trade school; must complete official application; must return application no later than Wednesday, February 22, 2023.  Application and additional information available in the Guidance Office and on Class of 2023 Teams. 

 

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE ALLEGHENIES – KENNETH “BIG KEN” DRANZIK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000 cash award – this memorial scholarship supports a graduating senior from either Greensburg Salem or North Star School District, who is accepted into any college, trade school, or qualified training program.  The ideal student exemplifies the key qualities of Big Ken, which are character and community service.  The student must provide letters of support from individuals showing examples of character and a list of community services performed.  Visit https://www.cfalleghenies.org/scholarships/ to apply for this opportunity.  This scholarship is open from October 1 through February 28. 

 

2022-2023 DREAM…INNOVATE…GROW Trade School + College Scholarship – Sponsored by BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY:  Three (3) $1,000 renewable scholarships for four years (equaling $4,000 total).  To be eligible, the applicant must be a high school senior and plan to attend a college, university or trade school in the fall of 2023.  Completed application must be received by March 1, 2023.  Application and additional information available in the Guidance Office and on Class of 2023 Teams. 

 

THE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS - Eligibility: GPA 2.5-3.5; enroll in 2 or 4-year, post-secondary educational institution or an accredited trade or apprenticeship program; must plan to major in a construction industry field (e.g. construction management, architecture, engineering, HVAC, etc.); plan to attend an educational institution in the US. FIRST COMMONWEALTH BANK SCHOLARSHIP FUND - $1,000 scholarship to high school seniors attending a college or university.  Students must have a 3.0 GPA, complete application and an essay (500 words or less) detailing how they have made a difference in their community and how that involvement impacted their community and life.  Deadline is March 1, 2023.  Visit http://www.fcbanking.com/scholarship for more information and application.

 

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP – the Horatio Alger Scholarship seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.  Criteria:  high school junior, commitment to pursue and complete bachelor’s degree, demonstrate financial need, be involved in co-curricular and community service activities, display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, minimum GPA of 2.0, be US citizen.  Deadline is March 15, 2023.  To apply visit https://scholars.horatioalger.org/

 

THE PITTSBURGH FOUNDATION AND THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF WESTMORELAND COUNTY provide scholarship opportunities for local students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students who are attending community colleges, four-year universities and career/technical schools. Who qualifies?  Whether you’re getting ready to graduate from high school or are an adult going back for your college degree or a graduate program, we may have funding for you. We award $2.8 million in scholarships annually and not just to students with a 4.0. Our minimum GPA is 2.0. Many scholarships are for students with financial need, specific majors or diverse life experiences. Our scholarships include awards for two- or four-year colleges and universities, and trade or vocational schools. We also offer scholarships for K-12 schools and enrichment opportunities for music lessons or camps. Our application makes it easy for students to apply for multiple scholarships at once. CNS HEALTH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS – providing scholarships to student who plan to major in some type of health care field including nursing, physical therapy, lab technician, pre-med, etc.  There are usually 5-7 scholarship awarded each year with the primary scholarship being the Ameene G. Makdad M.D. Memorial Scholarship worth 8,000 for four years, or #32,000 total.  Scholarships are based on grades and need.  Income with be a deciding factor for applicant who are the same in all other areas and interviewed well.  Application and additional information available at www.cnsscholarship.com/scholarship-application. AMEENE GEORGE. MAKDAD, M.D. SCHOLARSHIP

This primary scholarship is in honor of Ameene G. Makdad, M.D. whose service to Community Nursing Service in Greensburg, Inc. (CNS) began in 1955 as a board member.  He became Medical Director and President of the Board of Directors in 1977.  Dr. Makdad served in this capacity until the suspension of nursing operations in 1993.  He was instrumental in continuing the mission of CNS and initiating the scholarship program.  The Ameene George Makdad, M.D. Scholarship is a financial grant in the amount of $8,000 yearly to one applicant, renewable for three (3) years and is subject to meeting academic progress, need and maintaining a healthcare major.

ROBERT VAN ATTA HEALTHCARE SCHOLARSHIP

The secondary scholarship award of $6,000.00 yearly is in honor of Robert B. Van Atta whose long years of service as a historian, secretary and president of the Board of Directors, along with his extensive college scholarship experience, was invaluable to the organization.  This scholarship is renewable for three (3) additional years and subject to meeting academic progress, need and maintaining a healthcare major.

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Additional scholarships in the amount of $4,000 yearly may be awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors. This scholarship is renewable for three (3) additional years subject to meeting academic progress, need and maintaining a healthcare major.

 

ROTARY CLUB OF GREENSBURG - ROTARY CAREER ASSISTANCE SCHOLARSHIP - for high school seniors ranging in amounts from $500 to $2,500. Must be a senior in good standing, rank in the top 25% of class at high school or CWCTC. Deadline to return application to the Guidance Office is March 15, 2023.

 

BUDDHIST TZU CHI FOUNDATION – TZU CHI SCHOLARS 2023 – All high school graduating seniors are encouraged to apply.  Tzu Chi Scholars are selected based on financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement.  This is a nationwide program and each scholar will be awarded a total of $1,500.  Visit http://www.tzuchi.us for more information and application form.  Deadline for submission is March 18, 2023.

 

MID PENN BANK ANNA WOODSIDE SCHOLARSHIP – awarded to four outstanding high school seniors with $1,000 for college tuition costs.  To be considered, applicants must prove dedication to academic excellence and community service.  Additional information and application available at https://midpennbank.com/about-us/events/

 

GREENSBURG CLUB OF ITALIAN WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP – accepting applications for their annual scholarship awarded to women of Italian heritage with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater.  Over the past 5 years, over $50,000 worth of scholarships have been awarded.  Deadline for application submission to the Guidance Office is March 24, 2023.  Application and additional information available in the Guidance Office and Class of 2023 Teams.

 

FIRE CHIEFS ASSOCIATION OF WESTMORELAND COUNTY - JAMES H. CALDWELL INSPIRATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP - Attached is a scholarship opportunity for post-secondary education for students who have a relation that is a Westmoreland County firefighter or the student themselves are a Westmoreland County firefighter. This annual scholarship is administered through the Fire Chief’s Association of Westmoreland County.  Deadline is March 31, 2023.  Application available in Class of 2023 Teams and the Guidance Office.

 

NATIONAL ITALIAN AMERICAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME PITTSBURGH CHAPTER – scholarships will be awarded to four very deserving 2023 high school graduating student athletes.  The award consists of $4,000 in scholarship funds, awarded as $1,000 per year for four years provided the recipients successfully complete full time course loads each semester.  Criteria includes: high academic achievement, financial need, athletics ability at varsity level, anticipated June 2023 graduation.  Deadline is March 31, 2023.  Additional information and application available in the Guidance Office and in Class of 2023 Teams.

 

TIM LEONARD MEMORIAL FORENSICS SCHOLARSHIPS - available to senior students skilled in the components of Forensics; such as debate, argumentative writing, original oratory, dramatic interpretations, mock trial, student congress, creative writing and/or competitive scholastic teams to apply for a scholarship up to $1,000.000 to the college of your choice.  This scholarship program is available to students in four area high school:  Greensburg Central Catholic High School, Greensburg Salem High School, Greater Latrobe High School and Hempfield Area High School.  Deadline for submission is April 7, 2023.  Application and additional information available in the Guidance Office and Class of 2023 Teams.

 

The James P. Vrable Scholarship for Service to Others will be awarded to two winners in the amount of $2,000 each. This award will focus mostly—but not necessarily entirely—on the students’ history of volunteering and serving their community and the individuals in it. Prize money will be given directly to the winning students in the form of a bank note and may be applied to tuition, school supplies, or other living expenses. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled at Greensburg Salem High School and scheduled to graduate in the Spring of 2023. Applicants must be attending a college, university, trade school, or vocational school as of the Fall of 2023. In the event more than two students submit similarly strong applications, input from the Greensburg Salem Scholarship Committee concerning academic performance and/or need may be included in the final decision. EPILEPSY ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL PA – 2023 SCHOLARSHIP – STUDENTS THRIVING WITH EPILEPSY OR SEIZURE DISORDER – will award a minimum of 10 schooarsh8ip, totaling $11,500 to graduating high school seniors who have epilp0sy/seizure disorder and are going on to pos-secondary school.  The three students with the highest total scores will received a $1,500 scholarship and the remaining seven scholarships recipients will receive a $1,000 scholarship.  Applicant must have a diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorder; this must be confirmed by a statement from the applicant’s physician.  Application available at https://www.eawcp.org/programs/scholarships/

 

RAY OF HOPE, Westmoreland County’s Suicide Awareness and Prevention Task Force, is proud to announce the First Annual $1,000 Ray of Hope Scholarship to be awarded to one Westmoreland County graduating high school senior in May of 2023.  The applicants applying for this scholarship must have a passion for the Human Services field and demonstrate their long-term professional goals align with that passion.

Application available in Class of 2023 Teams and in the Guidance Office.  must be postmarked no later than April 15th, 2023.

 

WESTMORELAND AREA NURSING ASSOCIATION – NURSING CAREER AWARD – senior student pursing a nursing education leading to an R.N.  This award will be granted based on merit and is applicable to education l expenses only and will be sent directly to the school where the recipient has been accepted.  Application and additional information available in the Guidance Office and Class of 2023 Teams.

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AT GREENSBURG SLICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - Scholarships of up to $10,000 per year for a period of up to four years are available to eligible academically talented students. Currently, scholarships are being awarded for Fall 2023 to newly admitted undergraduate students with declared majors in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, & Applied Mathematics. To be eligible to participate in the scholarship program, students must:  Be an incoming first-year student or a transfer student intended to major in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Applied Mathematics in Fall 2023; Apply to be a full-time student at Pitt-Greensburg;  Be U.S. citizens, nationals, aliens admitted as refugees, permanent resident aliens; Demonstrate academic potential via a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; Demonstrate financial need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education https://www.greensburg.pitt.edu/slice-scholarship-program  IMPORTANT: Fall 2023 SLICE scholarship applications will be due on April 15, 2023. STUDENT-VIEW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – The 2023 Student -View Scholarship Program is offering $12,000 worth of scholarship to high school seniors wo plan to attend a four-year college, community/junior college or career school.  The program includes:  1 - $5,000 scholarship; 2-$1,000 scholarships; 10-$500 scholarships.  No minimum SAT/ACT score or GPA, no essay required, no lengthy application forms, no application fees.  Visit www.student-view.com for more information.  Deadline is April 23, 2023.

 

PENNSYLVANIA AMERICAN LEGIONS SCHOLARSHIPS - $500 - The Doctor Almo J. Sebastianelli Drum Corp Scholarship Fund is available to any senior residing in Pennsylvania who meets the following criteria: A child or grandchild of a Pennsylvania Legionnaire in good standing. A child or grandchild of a deceased Pennsylvania Legionnaire. To be eligible a student must be a member of a high school band who is going on to higher education majoring in music.  The Student needs to include his/her current high school transcript. The higher education school must be in Pennsylvania, letter of college acceptance must be included.
